British Isles Cruise Day 5 Dun Laoghaire and Dalke

Dun Laoghaire and Dalkey, Ireland

Today was spent visiting Dun Laoghaire (pronounced Dun Leery). Most people will just Dublin from this port, which is pretty close. Instead of going to Dublin, I explored more of the town of Dun Laoghaire and Dalkey (which was a very short train ride away).

In Dalkey, I visited Dalkey Castle, which is a 14th century castle. They put on an interactive experience at the castle which was an interesting way to learn more about the castle and the area.

(Part 2: Cobh, Ireland)

Today, the ship docked in Cobh (pronounced Cove), Ireland. First on the agenda was to take the train into Cork. The train station is right at the port, which is very convenient for cruisers. The ride is about 25 minutes long and is less than €10 roundtrip. It’s a cheap and easy option to get to the city.

I didn’t have any plans for Cork other than to take the hop on, hop off bus tour, run by Cork City Tours. Some people see these as very touristy, but I’m a tourist and these are a great way to see the sights, especially in a large city when you have limited time to see everything. On the tour, you will see all the historic and important sights in the city.

Following the tour, I took the train back to Cobh to explore this town. I’d been to Cork before but not Cobh. Cobh, Ireland is the last port of call for the Titanic and there’s a lot to see in town that has connections to the ship.

Of the two cities, I definitely enjoyed exploring Cobh more. It’s a cute, waterside town with a lot of history behind it. If you ever get the chance to go, I’d highly recommend it!

Day at Sea

Today was the first full day at sea. As much as I love port days and exploring new areas, I also love sea days. They’re so relaxing and often there’s a lot of activities planned by the entertainment staff on board.

Today, the Royal Butler that gave a talk yesterday gave a tea etiquette talk and then we watched a game show - Deal or No Deal.

This evening was the first formal night on board as well.

I didn’t take a lot of video clips throughout the day, but it was a good day!

Portland, England and Weymouth, England

Docked in Portland, England today and visited the nearby town of Weymouth. Portland is a small island, which is home to a Royal Naval base. This is also where the 2012 Olympic Sailing events took place.

The town provides a shuttle for cruise ships to take you into Portland and Weymouth. A short 15 minute drive takes you to Weymouth, a resort town which is a larger area than Portland. Walking down the esplanade will take you to various shopping areas and Weymouth Beach, which has received multiple awards, including Best Beach in the UK. There was so many neat things to do in the area that just couldn’t be worked into the short day allotted by the cruise ship, but I would think this would be a neat area to come vacation.

The coolest part of leaving Portland was the cannon send off that the navy provides for each ship as they sail off!

Back on board the ship was the first set of an enrichment series provided by Grant Harrold, who is a former butler for King Charles.

Then it was time to finish a puzzle, watch a water show on the lido deck, watch an illusionist and end a first great port day!

London Day 3 was full of more sightseeing - this time to Tower of London and Kensington Palace.

At the Tower of London, the Crown Jewels were on display, but you can’t take photos there.

At Kensington Palace, you’re able to tour the king and queen’s state rooms and learn about the history of the palace. The current exhibit is called Dress Codes and there are outfits on display from many royals of the current and past time.

Ended the day with a visit to Notting Hill to see the location of the bookstore from the movie!

Day two in London took us to the Sky Garden and Buckingham Palace.

The Sky Garden is a free viewing platform on the 35th floor of the Fenchurch Building but you need to make a reservation to enter. There was a standby line but it was very long. You can even make reservations to eat dinner at one of the restaurants inside the Sky Garden. This allows you to view London with an awesome viewpoint. It’s absolutely worth a visit!

You can’t take pictures inside of Buckingham Palace, but your admission includes an audio tour that guides you through the State Rooms: including the Ballroom, Throne Room, Drawing Rooms and more. It was so cool to see these rooms that have been a part of so many royal traditions over the years.

Day trip to Paris! Woke up early to catch the tra

Day trip to Paris! Woke up early to catch the train and it was worth it! You obviously can’t see and do everything in a matter of hours but you can still see and do enough to really feel like you’re there.

Looking back, I didn’t take that many pictures. But I’ve seen Paris through my phone multiple times now and it was nice to relax and take in the sights and enjoy my time instead of stressing over getting just the right pictures.

Paris is the first international trip I took, and it’s the place I’ve been the most. I love it. The architecture. The food. Everything.

Highlights from this day trip:
- Eurostar train travel (public transport in the United States absolutely does not compare)
- Double decker tour of the city (yes, they’re super touristy but I’ll never stop taking them)
- Seeing all the sights (Paris has so much to see!)
- Enjoying all the incredible food (the croissants at @maison_isabelle_paris are honestly life changing!)

Whether for a week or six hours, a visit to Paris is worth the time!
